In cities across the U.S., vintage military aircraft rest quietly in museums, where school children and tourists admire them, take their pictures and leave them behind closed doors at the end of each day. On September 16, 2022, aviation history blasts out of the museums and into the skies as the Commemorative Air Force thunders into Centennial Airport, led by the B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders. Accompanying the big bomber will a second WWII aircraft, both of whom are arriving for six days of tours and warbird flights at Wings Over the Rockies aviation museum.
The B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders is one of only three remaining that are actively touring today. This aircraft was the first Flying Fortress to be restored solely for the sake of education and use as a flying museum, and is accurately restored to WWII configuration, bristling with machine guns and featuring period-specific equipment. Accompanying the big bomber will be the popular SNJ / T6 Texan advanced trainer in which thousands of airmen learned to fly for combat. Both aircraft are notable for their historic importance and level of restoration.
Hosted by the Wings Over the Rockies aviation museum, the B-17 Showcase offers on-board tours with the aircraft crews, and the opportunity to take the ultimate Living History Flight Experience and see the Rocky Mountains from the sky! A limited number of flights are available on the warbirds.
Flights on the B-17 start at $525; flights on the Texan are $380.
Cockpit tours are available from 10:00 until 4:30 PM each day excluding flight times at Wings Over the Rockies, 13005 Wings Way, Englewood, CO 80112.
Admission to the event is $20 for adults, $10 for ages 6 to 17, $65 for a family of up to five and includes full admission to the museum as well as on-board tours of the visiting warbirds.
