October 4-9, El Reno, OK
Join the Commemorative Air Force as we recognize the re-dedication of the El Reno High School stadium in honor of the local veterans who gave their lives in World War II. Of the 12,731 B-17s built during WWII, only 9 are actively flying—including the CAF B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders. One of the last flying examples of the famous WWII aircraft arrives Friday October 4 in El Reno, Oklahoma to participate in the celebration. See the iconic bomber perform a flyover at the stadium dedication ceremonies on Friday evening, then take an on-board tour or a flight in this historic aircraft in the following days. El Reno’s re-dedication celebration committee has sponsored this visit of the Flying Fortress for six days of public tours and flights at El Reno Regional Airport, starting Saturday October 5 through Wednesday October 9. The committee has additionally sponsored tours for local school children in the days following the re-dedication, in order to support the CAF mission of remembrance and education with emphasis on teaching history to young Americans.
Texas Raiders was the first Flying Fortress to be operated solely for the sake of preservation and use as a flying museum. She is one of the most accurately restored B-17’s, and bristles with machine guns and features period-specific equipment. The public can visit the aircraft and for nominal admission can take a walk-through tour that includes commentary from crew members. Attendees who want the ultimate Flying Fortress experience can make a reservation now for one of the limited number of 25-minute flights on the classic aircraft. Tours of the aircraft are $10 for adults, $5 for children or $20 for a family of up to five members. Flights on the B-17 begin at $475.
The public is invited to come out to El Reno Regional Airport at 6600 South Mustang Field Road to tour the aircraft and meet her crew. Those who wish to fly with Texas Raiders are encouraged to call 1-855-FLY-A-B17 (1-855-359-2217) or reserve on line at www.B17TexasRaiders.org.
Cockpit tours are available Saturday through Wednesday beginning at 10:00 AM each day, and are conducted throughout the day, excluding flight times.
